Current Major Research Activities:

Measurement and interpretation of spatial and temporal variations of energetic charged particle fluxes in the solar system, using the various components - cosmic rays, solar energetic particles, escaping magnetospheric particles, and interplanetary accelerated particles - to investigate effects of the solar wind and the structure of the heliosphere. The observations are drawn principally from the current Ulysses and IMP-8 missions, and from the now-completed Pioneer 10 and 11 missions.

Development of a miniaturized neutron detector suitable for inclusion on spacecraft approaching the sun to search for a quasi-steady flux of solar neutrons.

Instrument development and analysis of response of cosmic ray telescopes to radiation in space using accelerator measurements and Monte Carlo simulations. Currently participating in development of the Energetic Heavy Ion Sensor (EHIS), a component of the Space Environment In-situ Sensor Suite (SEISS) for the GOES-R Environmental Satellite program.

Specification and development of software for data analysis.

Principal Investigator:

   - Cosmic and Solar Particle Investigations (COSPIN)
